On July 9, 2025, a special tribute echoed from the halls of Siri Fort Auditorium, New Delhi. India Post, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, released a commemorative postage stamp and coin marking the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee — a freedom fighter, educationist, and founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.
The Man Behind the Tribute
Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was a stalwart in Indian politics. Born in 1901, he rose to prominence as Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University at the age of 33, the youngest ever. Post-independence, he served in Nehru’s cabinet but later resigned due to ideological differences.
In 1951, he founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which eventually evolved into today’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His strong opposition to Article 370 and vision for a unified India remains one of his enduring legacies.
