On 24th August 2025, the Department of Posts paid a philatelic tribute to one of India’s most remarkable leaders—Shri Vithalbhai Patel. A special commemorative postage stamp was released at the All India Speakers Conference, held at the Delhi Vidhan Sabha, to mark 100 years of his election as the first Indian Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
The event brought together dignitaries, leaders, and philatelists to remember Patel’s fearless leadership and impartial role in shaping India’s democratic traditions.
The Legacy of Shri Vithalbhai Patel
Shri Vithalbhai Patel (1873–1933) holds a unique place in Indian history. He was the elder brother of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and a freedom fighter who carved his own independent path.
In 1925, he became the first Indian elected Speaker of the Central Legislative Assembly. Known for his firmness, fairness, and strict adherence to democratic principles, Patel transformed the Speaker’s role into an institution of authority and impartiality.
He was admired across party lines for his ability to maintain order and dignity in the Assembly. His tenure remains a benchmark for parliamentary conduct even today.
The Commemorative Stamp Release
The commemorative stamp was unveiled in the gracious presence of Shri Amit Shah, Hon’ble Union Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation, Government of India.
The release took place during the All India Speakers Conference, organized at Delhi Vidhan Sabha on 24–25 August 2025. The conference itself was themed around “100 Years Legacy of Veer Vithalbhai Patel,” highlighting his immense contribution to India’s democratic evolution.

The release ceremony was graced by several distinguished guests, including Shri Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs; Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena, Lt. Governor of Delhi; Smt. Rekha Gupta, Chief Minister of Delhi; and Shri Vijender Gupta, Hon’ble Speaker of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha.
