Celebrating 60 Years of India-Maldives Friendship through Stamps

On July 25, 2025, a historic moment was marked in Malé, the capital of Maldives. Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, and President of Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, jointly released commemorative postage stamps to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

• Indian Uru – A majestic wooden dhow built by hand in Beypore, Kerala. These boats have a long history in Indian Ocean trade and shipbuilding.
• Maldivian Vadhu Dhoni – A traditional fishing boat widely used for reef and coastal fishing in the Maldives. It represents island life and the deep connection of Maldivians with the sea.

Both vessels are more than just boats. They represent centuries of trade, craftsmanship, and cultural exchange across the Indian Ocean.

A Bond That Dates Back to 1965

India was among the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Maldives in 1965, right after its independence. Over the decades, the two countries have shared close cooperation in areas such as security, development, disaster relief, and cultural exchange.
