Recently, I received this beautiful cover from a philatelic friend. It bears an attractive pictorial meter-franking applied at Kolkata GPO and is a fine example of using a postal cover for the appropriate commemoration of an important national event.
The ₹5 postage was applied through a digital postage meter at Kolkata GPO, identified by PIN 700001, on 27 June 2026. The blue impression includes the postage value, date, machine details, Data Matrix code and a pictorial slogan commemorating “150 Years of Vande Mataram.”
Its Kolkata origin makes the cover particularly relevant. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay composed Vande Mataram in Bengal. It was first published in the literary journal Bangadarshan on 7 November 1875 and was later included in his novel Anandamath. The song subsequently became one of the most powerful expressions of patriotism during India’s freedom movement.
The Government of India is commemorating 150 years of Vande Mataram through a year-long programme from 7 November 2025 to 7 November 2026. The transit and delivery postmark on the reverse confirm that the cover genuinely travelled through the postal system, making it an interesting piece of modern postal history rather than merely a philatelic souvenir.
