Nuakhai, one of Odisha’s most important harvest festivals, received a philatelic tribute on 15 September 2026 with the release of a Special Cover and pictorial cancellation at the Philatelic Bureau, Bhubaneswar GPO.
The issue celebrates the agricultural traditions, folk culture and community spirit associated with Nuakhai.
The word Nuakhai comes from Nua meaning “new” and Khai meaning “food”. The festival marks the ceremonial consumption of the season’s newly harvested crop after it is first offered to the presiding deities.

The Special Cover reflects this tradition through imagery of paddy harvesting, folk dance, music, temple culture and the offering of the new crop. It was issued by the Department of Posts, Odisha Postal Circle, with approval number OD/14/2026. A specially designed pictorial cancellation was also provided at Bhubaneswar 751001, dated 15.09.2026.
I was also present at the release function, which made this issue more personal for my collection. Among those present were Shri Amulya Kumar Panda, Senior Post Master, Bhubaneswar, Shri Ratan Jana, IPoS, SSPOs, Bhubaneswar Postal Division, noted philatelist Shri Shakil Ahmed, and Shri Kashinath Sahoo, along with postal officials and members of Odisha’s philatelic community.
For collectors of Odisha, Indian festivals, agriculture, folk culture and harvest traditions, this is an attractive modern philatelic issue and a meaningful representation of one of Odisha’s cherished festivals.
