On 17 August 2025, a commemorative postage stamp was released in honour of Late Laxmidas Borkar, a freedom fighter, journalist, and eminent writer. The release ceremony was held at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, Goa. This marked the birth centenary of a man who gave more than five decades of his life to public service and literature.
Background and Significance
The event was organised by Laxmidas Borkar Janmashatabdi Samaroh Samiti in collaboration with Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. Shri P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Hon’ble Governor of Goa, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Shri Amitabh Singh, Chief Postmaster General (Maharashtra & Goa) and Sahitya Akademi award-winning writer Shri Damodar Mauzo attended as Guests of Honour.
Laxmidas Borkar (1925–2005) lived a life deeply tied with Goa’s freedom movement and journalism. He was not only a bold writer but also a mentor who trained young freedom fighters. His writings challenged the Portuguese rule in Goa, often leading to arrests and beatings.
Life and Contributions of Laxmidas Borkar
Here are some noteworthy aspects of his life:
- Freedom Fighter (1943–1961): Actively fought against Portuguese occupation of Goa, led satyagrahas, and trained young freedom fighters.
- Association with Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia: On 18 June 1946, he helped Dr. Lohia reach the satyagraha site by arranging a buggy when all taxis were controlled by the Portuguese. From 1946 to 1967, he worked closely with Dr. Lohia as a guide and supporter.
- Journalistic Career: Wrote more than 6,000 editorials, columns, and stories across 10+ newspapers and magazines in Marathi, Konkani, and English. His works included crime thrillers, children’s literature, and literary essays.

- Organisational Work: Served as office bearer of Goa National Congress (1947–1961), later became President of its Mumbai branch. He was also associated with Goa Hindu Association, Sane Guruji Katha Mala, Goa Union of Journalists, and Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh.
- Influence as a Mentor: Inspired generations of journalists in Mumbai and Goa through his editorship and support.
The Ceremony

The programme began with a keynote address by Dr. Narayan Desai. It was followed by the screening of Das-Parv, a documentary on Borkar’s life, directed by Shri Dnyanesh Moghe. The souvenir book Das – Laxmidas Borkar Shatabdi Smruti Granth was also released. In addition, four of his works—Nimbonichya Zaada Khali, Dnyandev, Diptakrat, and Avatar Rahasya—were launched in digital format.

Collector’s Note
A little disappointment arises this year with yet another personality-based issue, while thematic gaps remain unaddressed. Still, this release carries strong relevance because:
- It fits under Freedom Movement of India.
- It highlights Goa’s Liberation Struggle.
- It connects to Journalism and Literature in India.
- It honours a mentor of freedom fighters and a voice of resistance against colonial rule.
For these reasons, the stamp retains its philatelic and historical importance.
Closing Notes
The commemorative stamp for Laxmidas Borkar is not just a tribute to a writer but also to a freedom fighter who shaped Goa’s liberation story. His legacy lives through his writings, his role in the satyagrahas, and his influence on journalists across generations.
